Cuts, mistakes and bad boards mean you always need more than the measured area. Running short is worse than one spare case.

How to measure
Measure each room's length and width in feet and multiply them. Add the rooms together for your total. Do not subtract for kitchen islands, cabinets or closets you are flooring into, the plank still has to be cut around them, and the offcut usually is not reusable.
How much waste to add
Waste is the material lost to cuts, the occasional damaged board, and the piece at the end of a row that is too short to start the next one. It is not optional.
- 10%, straightforward rectangular rooms, planks laid parallel to the walls.
- 15%, spaces cut up by closets, angles, islands and hallways, or any diagonal layout, which generates considerably more offcut.
Then round up to whole cases, because flooring is sold by the case rather than by the foot. Our calculator does this for you.
Buy it all at once
This matters more here than at a national chain. Our inventory is made up of volume buys and closeout lots, so the exact product and lot you buy today may be gone next week. If you run one case short halfway through a room, there may be no more of it to sell you. Buy the whole job in one trip.
